Research: Music video

I am going to be making a music video for Mean by Taylor Swift which is off the album Speak Now but I am going to do the Glee version which is in season 3 episode 20 as it is slower and I can make the music video more focused on the story that I am thinking of incorporating, plus I believe I can get across more of an anti-bullying message using this version.

The costumes used in this music video are normal college clothing on the male (Puck) which is a black shirt and jeans. The woman (Coach Beiste) is wearing black shorts and a red polo shirt which is suitable to her character of being a coach. The make-up is not over done the only clear make up is Beiste's lipstick that is showing her feminine side in a prominently male profession. The genre of music is a country pop in my opinion as it is originally wrote by Taylor Swift who is a country pop singer. The location in this music video is on a stage with just the two singers in showing how lonely they feel. How personal things are affecting them and the only thing that is inspiring them is what is in the future and what can happen. This is a performance video as it was done on stage but their is no audience.

The costumes are very stage like and for the country scene's there is stereotypical country outfits of checkered shirts and jeans on the males and just a dress on the females. The scenes with the students represents a typical student being bullied by jocks and cheerleaders in their uniforms and jackets for the teams. In this song Taylor Swifts make up is made out to make her look like a movie star and all the others are as it is set out on stage of people chasing their dreams. Country-pop as this is what Taylor Swift is recognized for as part of this genre. The location is a stage with different backdrops for different type of people and different people who are involved in it. The lyrics aim to try and  inspire people and make people think I can be what I want to be no matter what people believe as at the end of the day its not their lives its yours and you are the only person who matters. This is also a Performance type video with only one person in the audience which is a child version of Taylor Swift.

The costumes are like very everyday clothes for school kids and there is very little make up on display as it might cause some issues with people thinking that children with make up on and lots of it can make people upset. This song is pop as it hasn't really got any really countryish music bits in it and Ed Sheeran is a very big pop artist. This song is focusing on a friendship as a child at school then not seeing that person until they are both older and seeing how much they have changed. Hence why the title is Everything Has Changed. This is a Narrative as it displays friendship that exists later on in life

Planning Music Videos.

Walking Into college slowly walking in following a person then slowly the music starts gradually as the person enters the college and is getting called names. Then it still follows the person who has now put their head down goes into a corridor and someone walks past them and barges them into a locker. before this there is a person looking on who is the intervening person.

Then as they slide down the locker it cuts to them on a park bench on their phone as an over the shoulder shot this is when they start receiving texts messages and during it more flood through. The persons face gets sad and they tighten up and put hands in pockets after turning their phone off. Intervening person walks into park and sees the person and stops and thinks about walking over but then walks off.

The next one is them going to their locker and opening it up and as soon as they open it a piece of paper falls out it has death threats and reads it out they crunch it up and starts crying. the intervening person sees the paper and closes the locker then walks away again.

Person is walking through college with their books then someone knocks the books out of their hands and pushes them over as he gets up the bully picks up a book and rips it in half then chucks it at the victim. The intervening person walks past as the victim picks all of their books up.

The victim sits alone at lunch and the bullies are pointing and laughing at them and the person is trying to block it out the intervening person is looking on and walks away again.

This time the victim is walking and starts getting pushed around then the bullies are closing in on beating the person up this is when the intervening person pushes them away and checks on the victim and helps the person up this is the first and only time you see the victim smile as they walk away together as it slowly fades to black..

Music Video Concept

I am going to do an anti bullying video. Showing someone being bullied in various different ways. Be it Physical, Verbally and Cyber. During this there is another person looking on who steps in and helps the person being bullied. I'm going to use the college and its surroundings as the locations I may use some scenes of a home depending if I can get the actors to my house or get to their house. The bullying will be receive nasty text messages and death threats, also being pushed into lockers and shoved onto the floor and the victims  mood slowly gets worse as the bullying gets worse until the person who intervenes helps them and then they give a slight smile.

The Purpose Of Music Video's

I am writing this essay to discuss why music video's are used and what they are used for. Video's were first used in 1941 to accompany songs from jukeboxes. The first video to really kick the Music video era into action was Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. There have been different variety's of music videos from ones that tell stories to ones that are just a performance of the band preforming the song.

Music video's can be used to promote the artist or director. They promote themselves by having a recognizable image or set of words like in Nights by Avicii you can see their is two triangles this was the image to promote his True Tour it is also visible in his song Wake Me Up. Music videos also promote artists by intising people to download the video as it may involve something memorable that they may want to show family and friends. Directors can also benefit as some directors have directed music videos before having their shot at Hollywood films a director who shows this is Joseph McGinty Nichol also known as 'McG' has directed films like Terminator Salvation and Charlie's Angels directed Music Video's in the 90's such as Sugar Ray's 'Fly' and Smash Mouth's 'All star'.

Producers use different strategies to try and promote the song someone will release a lyric video and a actual music video. Some even pay to get the video advertised on other videos on video sharing websites like YouTube. They also can pay to feature on Music Video stations such as MTV. These are just some of the strategies used by Major labels to promote their artists songs. Where as Independent Artists have to promote their on YouTube as well but have to just rely on their viewers to spread the word about their song and video. People who have benefited from uploading songs to YouTube is Conor Maynard who started by doing covers of songs on YouTube until he got picked up by Parlophone in late 2011 after artist Ne-Yo watched a cover of one of his own songs 'Beautiful Monster'. Some Music video's are used to create something for the viewer to look at like Gotye - 'Somebody That I Used To Know' it had nothing to do with the song but made something that attracted the viewers eye's

Another reason why music videos are made, is because the artist technically get paid royalties for every view they get. The reason they technically get paid is because it would be very hard to track the amount of full views the music video gets and how many people watch it and don't replay it so. So they estimate the amount of views they get so they can pay the royalties all in one go instead of per view. So the artists can also make money from music videos and that is one of the reasons they can make them.

Artists also make music video's so they can get their music out there and as they upload them to sites like YouTube. From their the viewer can share it onto Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc. This is particularly useful when the artist is trying to appeal to teenagers as they are the ones who mainly use YouTube to watch music videos and they also check Facebook and Twitter regularly.

Synergy is where a music label link up with a production company that make things so that they can sell more merchandise famous examples of this are One Direction who have sold figures and clothing items.

So in conclusion Music Videos are used to attract and sell the artists music. As sites such as YouTube now promote the artist and all the music they do by having it on their channels. They can also pay for adverts on other videos to promote theirs.
