The nature and purposes of research in the creative media industries

Primary Research- primary research is research that you go out and collect yourself. Examples of this is; surveys, interviews and observations. I did surveys in my TV advert section and ESting section and I also did interviews in my 3 minute wonder documentary and also in a project for the college we did for the local hospitals children's ward. Professional's use primary research through test screenings of movies and TV shows and then ask the audience questions and ask the to fill in questionnaires to get a general consensus on how people see the film and their opinions

                                                       Interview for my documentary
I was trying to get knowledge from a professional on what Dyspraxia

Interview for client video
Getting knowledge from a professional on what they do on a children's ward at a hospital

Secondary Research- where a person collects the research off the internet and so its collecting data that already exists. Examples that I did for this was finding out about Unilever and E4 by going on their websites so their is internet research and watching documentaries. Here is an example of secondary research that I did. Professional access critics review of their films as they are public knowledge and someone has conducted their own research the professionals just look at it and see what people think of their film or show.
I watched E-sting for my working to a brief topic I did this so I could find out information and get examples of what works and what doesn't work in animation and in an E-sting

example of a review from the guardian for: The Dark Knight
Quantitative Research- is when you ask people closed questions to gather data and statistics. Professionals gather quantitative research by seeing box office results and totaling up how much money they made in their opening weekend and all together.
this shows professional quantitative research by box office mojo it shows the money each film has made from the box office
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/
This is my example of quantitative research  it is taking peoples opinion of  how much of a channel they watch and then turned it into a chart.

Qualitative Research- Is when you ask people to explain and give their opinions so you can get a reason why they don't or do like it so you can work on it. Professionals get critics work that have been written and read it and see what media critics for of their product whether it be a (film, tv show, etc.)

this is my example of qualitative as it is asking people to expand on their opinions so it easier to understand what they mean by the answers that they put down

this is an example of a professional qualitative research. it is a review for Game Of Thrones by Empire magazine

Data gathering agencies- BARB is the organisation that compiles audience measurement and television ratings in the United Kingdom. It then releases the figures weekly to show the most popular figures on each channel. IMBD rates the movies on peoples review and gives the public audience a chance to review the films.

this is a screenshot from IMBD it shows the gather infomation for films and display them on their website this is for the film Central Intelligence   http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1489889/

Audience and Market Research-  is where you research to find out what the target audience wants and then you can develop ideas on top of this and can make something that pleases the whole audiences needs
own user feedback survey

I got survey responses so I could see what worked and what didn't work in my TV advert and what I could improve if I were to do it again. Also to find out if my advert worked at branding to a new target audience.
this box records viewing figures in the UK only 15,000 people have one. They record the viewing figures and BARB then calculate them and release the estimated viewing figures for the country.

Production Research- is when you look into locations and talents using paperwork like Location Recee's and Talent releases so if you need someone to appear in your piece or somewhere you have to look into the availability here is examples of what I did
location recee

Location Recee

Talent release.

I did this so I know each location was good and okay to use and that everybody in my video's had agreed to be filmed and were okay with it being put on YouTube.

this is a location manager he sorts out all the locations for films he sorts out finding and securing locations for films, television and comericals
